Samantha is our lead writer for our upcoming Spooktober Game Jam entry. She is an extremely talented writer with numerous published novellas that also works freelance for indie games. We're so excited to have her on the team for our Game Jam entry!
What got you interested in writing?
"My interest in writing started when I was around 8 years old. We were taking a test in school and had paper to draw on if we finished early. Instead of drawing, I wrote a story. I enjoyed the whole experience so much I knew right then I wanted to spend the rest of my life writing stories."
As a writer, what types of challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
"Some parts of writing, such as writing descriptions, don't come naturally to me. I end up adding in descriptions while revising my stories, and even then I need beta readers to point out to me spots that could still use more. Of course, that isn't as much of an issue with something like Party Tales, since these stories have art rather than relying on written description alone.
On the business side of things, actually breaking into the writing world isn't easy. When I used to tell people I wanted to be a writer, they'd usually ask me what I'd do to earn money. Getting into freelance writing was daunting at first, but I started to pick up little writing jobs, and they seemed to have a cumulative effect. Little jobs meant more work I could put on my resume, which helped me get more jobs, which also went on my resume, etc. By building up gradually, I was able to reach a point where I have a lot of regular freelance writing work that I enjoy doing."
What is your favorite genre of writing and why?
"When it comes to longer works, I love fantasy. I love writing about characters in a separate world with exciting conflicts, epic quests, and sinister villains manipulating events from the shadows.
For shorter works, however, horror is where I thrive. Maybe it's because I read a lot of short horror stories growing up, but the horror genre just seems like the best fit for short stories to me."
Where can we find your work?
"I have a handful of novellas and short stories that have been published, most of which are available on Amazon. I've also worked on other indie games including Ascendant Hearts, Two Till Midnight, and Eternal Radiance, which are all on Steam.
You can also visit my website, which includes both my blog and pages for my work: http://www.samanthalienhard.com/"
Outside of writing, what are some of your hobbies?
"My biggest hobbies are reading and playing video games. If I'm not writing, I'm most likely doing one of those two things."
